"be prepared, in the event of a potential threat to the security of the United States, to take actions necessary to ensure the availability of adequate resources and production capability, including services and critical technology, for national defense requirements..."

Of course, we don't have much 'production capability' left. I don't see how they plan to defend the empire using nothing but hip-hop and amateur porn.

"Open up, this is the HSA! We are commandeering the use of this pornographic production facility for purposes of national security!"

We'll be fine... as long as we're not attacked by any southeast asian country that builds all of our .. well .. everything. What's going to happen if we're attacked by India? All of our tech support and customer call centers will be history. Suppose we're attacked by Canada... wait... scratch that one.

Speaking of Indians, I had as riders on Saturday 3 Indian looking Englishman in the cab. All three (and it wasn't a gag), sounded like Austin Powers.

The irony is that even if those countries did attack us (which by the way, after we kicked the Brits out there hasn't been a real battle on US soil) - we'd still be using the products and services made by the country we are at war with - it's a freakin global culture now!

Tod, you crack me up. You say it so well.

National Defense is not only related to being attacked by other countries, and not even attacks from within.

The line between National Guard and National Defense via military has blurred now since Iraq.

The more likely problem will be related to control of markets and resources, that could result in restrictions on the U.S.

Think in terms of what would happen if an embargo was placed on us. Certainly national defense would involve all kinds of actions that could range from aggression to procurement efforts.

Plus, there would have to be management of the public who would behave just like other nations suffering disasters or famines.

Competition for resources is a big problem now and for the future.

For the U.S., infrastructure is very important, and in my opinion, we need to get ourselves in a more self sufficient state, and keep in mind limited resource as well. BIG PROBLEM!!!
