By Kristi Jourdan LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL Posted: Feb. 20, 2012 | 8:46 p.m. The tents are gone. So are the portable toilets. The tiny parking lot tucked away on Paradise Road near the airport was at the center of controversy when Clark County officials allowed Occupy Las Vegas protesters to camp there. They called it Area 99. It was a place for supporters in the movement to voice their opinions about corporate greed and influence in politics. Then the homeless came, and the occupation site seemed to transform into an extension of social services as the protesters tried to connect the poor with resources in between camp meetings about foreclosures, unemployment and the 99 percent. Then most of the protesters left.
Reported by: Sergio Avila | MyNews3 LAS VEGAS (AP) — Occupy Las Vegas demonstrators have been cleaning up a vacant lot after their Clark County-approved lease on the property expired. County officials notified the protesters they needed to leave the 2.5 acre site near McCarran International Airport and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, by 5 p.m. Monday. The group's website says members voted weeks earlier to leave the site without resistance when the permit expired. The permit issued in October allowed demonstrators to set up camp as long as they provided portable restrooms and met other conditions.

I just got a call from "Marina" at Fox5. She wanted to know if I had any information on tomorrow's planned Foreclosure Actions. I explained to her that I was not part of the group organizing that event, and laid out the 15-second elevator speech about occupylasvegas.org and occupylv.org. She already knew. ;-) She said she called me because the other group is "hard to get a hold of". She then asked again if I had any information on the FC action. I told her what we know from the archived livestreams. Yes it is happening, and it will take place at multiple locations, but no, the addresses have not been released yet due to security concerns. Her reply was "That makes sense". Over and out!

Thoughts on the Occupy Movement: Forgive me for being so direct, but I've hardly heard it utter a single reasonable sentence so far. It's all vague criticism of capitalism, markets and the market economy in general.~ Former Deutsche Bank CEO Hilmar Kopper Source While this may infuriate members of Occupy, I think it is worth considering that speaking with knowledge, rather than emotional reactions, is worthwhile in such a gigantic fight for change.

By Cy Ryan | Las Vegas Sun CARSON CITY – The state Public Utilities Commission authorized NV Energy to raise its rates, with the increase on an average single-family home in Las Vegas an estimated 10-11 percent. The electric utility had sought an increase of more than 20 percent. After hearing protests from a handful of customers, the commission voted to allow the rates to take effect Jan. 1. The rate increase for commercial customers will be 7 percent or less because commercial customers have been subsidizing residential customers. The goal of the company and the commission is to eliminate commercial subsidies to residential customers.
By Jason R. Latham, Continuous News Manager - LAS VEGAS (FOX5) Members of Occupy Las Vegas plan to hold a candlelight vigil outside of Metro police headquarters on Monday to protest what they claim is excessive force used by police against unarmed citizens. The vigil was announced in the wake of the Dec. 11 shooting of Stanley Gibson, a Gulf War veteran shot by police at the Alondra condominiums in northwest Las Vegas. "From coast to coast, Americans are keeping a tearful and watchful eye on police departments nationwide due to their ever-escalating use of excessive force against unarmed individuals and groups," Occupy Las Vegas said in a statement.

by Darcy Spears | KTNV Channel 13 | Dec. 6, 2011 Clark County, NV (KTNV) - Mortgage modification misconduct and foreclosure fraud are problems so big, our state can no longer fight them alone. This morning, the Attorneys General from Nevada and California announced they're joining forces. It's being called an alliance to accelerate investigations as the two states hit hardest by the nation's foreclosure crisis team up for battle.
. . . . In the same Kansas town President Teddy Roosevelt gave his New Nationalism speech over 100 years ago, President Obama made a speech intended to take up the same theme today (December 6, 2011). Is President Obama trying to co-opt the Occupy Movement, or is he just trying to avoid a speeding train? If he manages to avoid getting hit by the train would that be a positive or negative development, and positive or negative for whom? Is his speech just the opening salvo of what are sure to be repeated attempts to motivate voters for the 2012 election cycle?

Ninety-Nine Percent Gone? (Forum)
By Bob Whitby | November 11th, 2011 [...] What happened was, perhaps, sadly inevitable given the nature of group dynamics. It’s a long, convoluted tale with way more back-and-forth than anyone outside of the argument wants to hear, but it boils to this: A small group took control of the empty lot, dubbed Area 99, and other people didn’t like that. Occupy as a rule is a leaderless, non-hierarchical movement that runs on the often-maddening idea that everyone gets a turn with the talking stick. When someone steps up to exert control over that process, there goes your democracy. [source]

Some Background on that "Shoot To Kill Media" ad with Occupy Vegas on it for no apparent reason (Forum)
Short background: During the meeting we held on Monday (11-14), someone brought to the group's attention an ad they had found in "Vegas Seven" magazine. This email showed up in my inbox this morning. I kind of wanted to throw up in my mouth. It made me angry at how easy it is to accentuate the negative side effects of the movement, and sad at the ignorant people who will read this and write off OWS as a bunch of whining brats who want a handout. And when the only message the media conveys is that we are against "corporate greed" that is all we will sound like. We need to have more specific, more informed, more positive messages.
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) - A local business owner owes the bank thousands from a loan she says they can't pay. Now she's getting some help from the Occupy Las Vegas movement. The business is a Sinclair gas station on Maryland Parkway and Flamingo. The owner says they have been trying to work with their lender for two years, even going to mediation, but it hasn't helped.
