#F29 - Action against NV Energy & ALEC

Date / Time:

Wednesday, February 29, 2012 - 2:00pm to 6:00pm

Event Organizers:

OccupyLV.org in cooperation with Occupy Portland and over 80 Occupied Cities

Description:

On Feb 29, Occupy Las Vegas is calling for a march down Sahara Avenue to the offices of NV Energy, in protest of their environmental record and their involvement with a powerful corporate lobbying group: the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). Over 80 Occupy Cities around the world are joining to oppose this controversial organization, which writes anti-environmentalist bills for your representatives to rubber-stamp. NV Energy is an ALEC member.

They are poisoning the air and the water.
They are killing the Paiute people.

Activist? Or just want to help? Click here to find out how.

SHUT OFF YOUR POWER ON FEB 29.
MARCH AGAINST NV ENERGY & ALEC FEB 29.
WE'LL SEE YOU IN THE STREETS!

There has been a theft by the 1% of our democratic ability to shape and form the society in which we live and our society is steered toward the destructive pursuit of consumption, profit and greed at the expense of all else.

We call on everyone in the city of Las Vegas - activists and non-activists alike - to take action against corporations like NVEnergy that are part of ALEC - the American Legislative Exchange Council - a corporate thinktank that writes "model bills" for YOUR representatives to sign into law. We urge you to join us in demonstrations, marches, boycotts, strikes, walkouts, and any other form of non-violent action against more than 400 ALEC corporate members ALL DAY on FEB 29.

Our anti-ALEC march will form at Sahara & Decatur at 2PM, in an area of town which is ripe with ALEC member corporations and their distribution points. Affinity Groups are encouraged to perform their own actions, research their own preferred ALEC targets along the way, and get creative! The march will then proceed to its final destination: the local offices of energy monopolists, ALEC members and murderous profiteers at NVEnergy.

I used to work for an AT&T spin-off. Prior to year 2000, if you worked at AT&T for 20 years, you automatically qualified for a retirement pension at 80% of my maximum annual salary. Pretty good right? So how did AT&T reward their loyal employees? They laid off everyone after 19.5 years so the employees got no pension at all. How fucking evil is that?

There are many things you can do to strike a blow against the corrupt power of ALEC:

BEFORE THE EVENT

DISTRIBUTE FLYERS & POSTERS
Print as many as you can, distribute as many as you can, all over town! Public Awareness is key to the impact of the powerdown.
[fullpage flyer]
[4-up flyers]
[how you can help flyer]

DISTRIBUTE INFORMATION SHEETS
Same thing with our information sheets explaining the situation at Moapa Town and our position on the Reid Gardner plant - these are for informing people who want to know more than the info on the posters...
2-Page Info Sheet (for double-sided printing)
Unseen Costs of Burning Coal (1-sided)

SPREAD THE WORD
Tell all your friends & co-workers about Feb 29. Write about it on your blog or facebook wall. Mention it in your newsletters. Tweet about it. Get everyone you know to check out this web page. Convince everyone in your apartment complex to shut off their power that day. Don't be afraid to get creative. Kids, tell your parents - SHUT IT DOWN FEB 29!

DAY OF THE EVENT

MARCH WITH US
This is our main action of the day. Join us at Sahara & Decatur at 2PM on Feb 29. We will crown the day of anti-ALEC actions with a march to NVEnergy's local office. They should have expected us.

OTHER ANTI-ALEC ACTIONS
Are you itching to do something a little more creative? Go for it! There are many ALEC members to choose from. See here for local ALEC members (potential targets for your affinity group). It is recommended that you time your action (if possible) to either occur before 2PM, after 5PM, or (if it's close to the marching area) to coincide with the march (enabling you to perform your action and then fold into the march itself).

BOYCOTT ALEC COMPANIES AND PRODUCTS
A list is developing here. Please feel free to add more.

>> POWER DOWN <<
If you don't feel like marching but you still want to make a statement against NVEnergy - or even if you do come out and join the march - please TURN OFF YOUR POWER all day on Feb 29. Just turn off all electronic appliances (such as computers), and then flip your main circuit breakers. The silence is astonishing, and you can spend some quality facetime with your family.

After talking to Susan the other day I know what their crew is up to... If they do their end well... and we hit ours... F29 will be remembered in Vegas. It will definitely be a good show that OLV is not dead.

I know, right? Surprised me too!

Here's one reason I'm so excited: I got copies today of the outreach email blasts from both the Center for Biological Diversity and the Sierra Club, verifying fo sho that they WILL be sending people out to march with us.

Sierra Club said: "It is more than gratifying to see Occupy Las Vegas target this issue for action! See you there."

This is what real grassroots looks like. We are able to reach out to to other grassroots groups. We are now resembling a orginized group. Check out the cool video Tod looks like a bad ass activist. Go Morpheus.
